You may think that recruiters and employers don’t read cover letters, but if you think that, you’d be wrong.
Not only do they read them, a cover letter is a very effective tool you can use to stand out from the crowd, to give you the best opportunity of being asked to come in for an interview.
But recruiters and employers don’t read all cover letters. They skim read most of them, then only read the ones that stand out and catch their eye.
Recruiters will tell you that a lot of cover letters are filled with waffle.
Even though the applicant has written it to get across the message of how qualified they are for the job, the way most cover letters are written tends to be the same, so none stand out.
So today I’m going to go through how to write a cover letter that stands out…
That shows you’re a candidate for the job, that the employer definitely wants to get in for an interview.
The secret ingredient for your cover letter is it has to have something in it that shows you have a personal connection with the employer.
Ideally it should have something in it that jumps out for the employer or recruiter and engages them in what it says. It should generate an emotional reaction from them.
When your cover letter does that, the recruiter or employer will read your resume, and will then be much more likely to get you in for an interview.
There are a few ways to write your cover letter, in such a way, that it does this.
is to tell the employer how what they do is special.
For example, you may have had an experience with the company as a customer, and you found what they did was better, faster, more convenient, their service was second to none, or whatever it may be that you found that sets their company or brand apart from their competitors.
is to tell them about the first time, or a time that stands out in your mind, when you used their product or service.
Then use this experience to explain to them that you GET what the company or brand is about and the reason why you’re so positive on the company.
Is to show the company that you’re on their page.
What this means is you should explain how your values are aligned with their company values.
This shows that you’re one of them. That you’re part of their tribe.
Explain something that happened in your life that caused you to align with their company values and beliefs.
The more personal you can make your cover letter, the better.
Think of it this way…
If spend the time on the cover letter for a job application, and it gets you an interview, then the time spent writing it was worth it.
So instead of creating a standard cover letter for all your applications, spend some extra time personalizing each cover letter.
You’ll be granted more interviews and be offered a new job faster.
