When you’re asked the question…
‘Why do you want to work here?’ in an interview, it’s an opportunity for you to show the hiring manager that you’re the right person for the job.
Telling the hiring manager ‘I like your company’ or ‘I like your products’ or ‘I’ve heard your company is a good place to work’, won’t cut it these days.
You need to find a compelling reason why you want to work for the company, that you can communicate to the hiring manager.
When you have a compelling or deeper reason as to why you want to work for the company, it will make a positive impact on the hiring manager and take you much closer to being offered the job.
So here are a few ways you can answer… ‘Why do you want to work here?’
If you like the company’s products, and, apart from the fact you need to earn an income, their products are the main reason you like their company, then explain to the hiring manager what you like about their products.
Go into some depth.
If you use their products, then which ones do you use? Why do you use their products and not their competitors?
Go into detail about your experience with their products and why you love to use them.
Another reason might be that you like that the company is environmentally conscious.
Maybe the company contributes to a particular cause you’re passionate about, or maybe the people who work at the company are socially conscious in the same way you are.
Talk about it if that’s the case.
You might be impressed with the company’s technology or process for doing business.
If that’s the case then talk about what it is that impresses you.
Do you think the company has huge potential because of their technology?
Or do you love their customer service and the way they treat their customers?
Talk about what it is that impresses you so much.
The easiest way to come up with a compelling reason you want to work for the company you can talk to the hiring manager about is to do your homework on the company before you sit down for the interview.
So do your research, come up with your compelling reason and then talk passionately about it in the interview.
