What is an avionics technician?
Also sometimes called an avionics electrical technician or avionics electronics technician, they maintain and repair an aircraft’s (or space craft) electronic instruments, including navigation, radio (communication), radar and missile control systems (avionics equipment).
Avionics Technician job description and duties
It is their responsibility to ensure all on board electronic systems are working correctly.
Tasks include:
- Install, test and repair aircraft or spacecraft avionics equipment
- Install aircraft assemblies according to manuals, blueprints and wiring diagrams
- Assemble switches, electrical controls and junction boxes
- Keep accurate maintenance records
- Set up and run ground support and testing equipment for flight tests of aircraft avionics while in flight
- Analyse and interpret flight data to diagnose system malfunctions and problems
The above is done using voltmeters, oscilloscopes, circuit testers and electronics repair tools including hand tools and soldering irons contained in an avionics technician tool kit

How to become an Avionics Technician
A common way is to become an avionics technician in the Air Force, Navy or Army.
Civilian Avionics technician training include:
- Certificate 4 in Aeroskills – Avionics
- Training with large airlines or aerospace companies
This will give you the education and certification. A degree is not required.
An interest in computers, electronics and electrical control systems is preferred to enjoy the job and excel in avionics technician schooling and training.
