The 6 Most Common Types Of Illegal Interview Questions

When you’re in an interview, there are certain questions the interviewer is not allowed to ask you.

Most countries have made it illegal to ask certain questions that are considered discriminatory or biased, in an interview.

Regardless of the country you’re in, the questions an interviewer is not allowed to ask are very similar.

So today let’s run through the 6 main questions that, in most countries, interviewers are not allowed to ask you.

The first group of questions are family based questions.

These are questions like-

  • Are you married?
  • Are planning to get married
  • Do you have kids?
  • Are you pregnant?
  • Are you planning to get pregnant?

Whether you’re married or not, whether you’re pregnant or planning on getting pregnant, whether you have kids or not, these questions, in the main, should not be asked by an interviewer.

The second group of questions are questions about your race

These include questions like-

  • What’s your nationality?
  • What race are you?
  • What’s your background?
  • Where is your family from?

Questions around race are a no-no in interviews.

The third group of illegal questions are around religion.

These are questions like-

  • Are you religious?
  • What’s your religion?
  • What church do you go to?

In most countries, it’s illegal to be discriminated against over your religion or beliefs.

The fourth group of questions are around living arrangements

Some of the questions around this are-

  • Do you own your own home?
  • Do you rent?
  • Do you live in an apartment or house?
  • Do you have any living with you?
  • Do you live alone?
  • Do you live with your parents?

The fifth group of questions are about gender.

These are questions like-

  • Are you male?
  • Are you female?

And the sixth group of questions are age related questions.

These can include-

  • What year were you born?
  • How old are you?
  • When is your birthday?

The reason these questions are illegal in most countries is because they have no bearing on your ability to do the job.

The reason questions are illegal is because legislators have deemed them discriminatory.

However, there are employers who will ask some of these illegal questions for the wrong reasons.

But there are some inexperienced interviewers who will ask some of them without knowing they’re illegal. They may just be trying to make conversation.

When you’re in an interview and you’re asked any of these questions, whether it’s intentional or not, be prepared with how to answer them.
