4 Tips For Acing The Group Interview
When you’re looking for work, you may be asked at some point to attend a group interview.
A group interview is where all the decision makers for the company are present at your interview.
The main reason companies choose to do a group interview is so all decision makers involved in the new hire can see the candidate first hand at the same time and form their own opinion whether to hire that person.
In most cases, not all, but certainly in most cases, when a company asks a potential hire to attend a group interview, the company is already interested in that person, so if you’re ever asked by a company to come in for a group interview, or find yourself being interviewed by a group of people, then take it as a compliment.
It’s a good sign. It means the company is seriously considering you.
The dynamics of a group interview are a bit different to a one on one interview, and it can be intimidating to be in the hot seat as a group of people throw questions at you.
So if you follow these 4 tips, you’ll breeze through the interview, impress everyone present, and give yourself the best chance of being offered the job.
Tip 1 — Prepare Your Answers To Questions
You should always prepare your answers to questions you could be asked, before you sit down for ANY interview.
For a group interview, it’s even MORE important.
Obviously, you need to be able to answer specific questions about your experience and skills to do the job.
But you also need to be ready to answer the behavioural questions you’ll inevitably be asked.
When you’ve prepared for an interview, you’ll be relaxed while you’re in it.
So preparation is the key to answering the questions you could be asked.
In the box below are links to 2 videos with some of the best ways to answer the questions you’re most likely to be asked in an interview, so check them out.
A good strategy for preparing how to answer the questions you’re likely to be asked in an up coming interview is to think of any questions you’ve been asked in previous interviews you’ve been in, then think about the questions you didn’t do so well answering.
Then think about how you can answer each question, in the best way possible that will impress the hiring manager.
In fact, a good strategy for this is to have 2 or 3 alternative ways to answer each question, so you have a tool chest of great answers to any question the hiring manager could ask you.
You should also watch the videos I’ve given you the links to in the box below. The answers I go through in those are the best answers we’ve come across yet, so watch those too.
When you do this it’ll give you confidence walking into the interview, and it also gives you flexibility, so you can gauge the direction of the interview and answer in the best way, any questions you’re asked, so you impress your interviewers in the best possible way.

Tip 2 — Questions and Answers
When you’re asked a question, make sure your answer relates to the question specifically.
This may seem like I’m stating the obvious, but the reason I say it is because it’s easy to get caught up in a rambling answer, that doesn’t do you any favours in the eyes of the interviewers.
If you want to add any other points to your answer, do it if you think it will add to your answer, but make sure you articulate that the extra points are in addition to your answer to their question. But don’t ramble. Be specific.
When the interviewers ask you a specific question, a good strategy is to acknowledge you heard the question correctly. The way to do this is to repeat the question back to the person who asked it.
This shows the interviewers you heard the question. It also shows you’re clarifying the question so you can be precise with your answer. This impresses most hiring managers.
So for example, when you’re asked a question, you could say…
‘So just to be clear, what you’re asking is THIS… Is that correct?’
You can then answer the question.
Tip 3 — Create A Group Discussion
Look at everyone and hold eye contact with your interviewers when you’re talking.
And involve everyone in the conversation, even the person sitting at the back or off to the side who’s not saying anything.
If you engage everyone in the conversation, every person interviewing you is more likely to consider the interview was positive, which will give you a better chance of being offered the job.
A great way to do this is to ask questions. When you ask questions, you turn the interview into a group discussion, rather than an interrogation of just you.
You’ll build rapport with your interviewers, and asking questions also means you take some control of the interview, because in a conversation, the person asking the questions has control of the conversation.
There are 8 great questions you can ask when you’re in an interview that give you great insight into the company and the job you’re applying for. They’re also questions that impress hiring managers when you ask them, so check out that video too. The link is in the box below.
Tip 4 — Make the case as to why you’re the best person for the job
The last tip is to remember the key points of the interview, then use those points to push home why you’re a great choice for the job.
When you do this, make sure you mention the points the interviewers brought up as important to them, and show how those things are important to you as well.
