Common Interview Mistakes EVERYONE Makes — And How To Avoid Them

Most of us aren’t trained in interview techniques, so it makes sense that when we attend an interview we’re going to make mistakes.

For obvious reasons you want to present the best you can in an interview so you’re offered the job, so when you minimize the potential mistakes you could make in an interview, you’ll be that much closer to being offered the job.

The way to do that is to be prepared.

When you’re prepared for the interview, you’re in a much better position to impress the hiring manager and obviously, then be offered the job.

So to get you prepared, here are the common mistakes people make in an interview and how you can avoid making them yourself.

First up…

Be prepared for the behavioural questions the hiring manager will ask you.

Behavioural questions are the questions that involve your skills, abilities and personality.

They’re where the hiring manager will usually ask how you handled certain situations in your previous jobs.

For example, a common behavioural question is…

Tell me about a time when you had an angry client or customer. What happened, and how did you diffuse the situation?

What the hiring manager is looking for in your answer is an indication of how well you can handle certain situations. They’re looking for how adept you are at handling the difficult situations that come up from time to time, in the workplace…

whether that be dealing with customers or clients, your workmates, your direct superiors or you subordinates.

So before you go into the interview, think about what questions the hiring manager could ask you that will show how you’re the best person for the job you’re applying for.

Then ideally come up with 2 or 3 ways you can answer each question so you that when you’re asked the question in the interview, you don’t hesitate, you answer immediately and confidently.

While we’re on the subject of interview questions, you’re going to be asked competency questions by the hiring manager.

A competency question is a question that relates directly to your ability to be able to do the job.

For example, if you’re applying for the position of airline pilot, the hiring manager is going to want to know that you can fly a plane!

Competency questions hold more weight than other questions so think about how you’ll answer any competency questions you could be asked that relate to the job you’re applying for.

When you’re answering each question, keep your answer concise and to the point.

Try not to waffle or lose track of your answer.

When you answer the questions concisely and clearly, you’re showing the hiring manager that you know what you’re doing and you’re the right person for the job.

This is where being prepared before you go into the interview helps you enormously.

Secondly…

Make the interview a two-way conversation.

An interview shouldn’t be a Q & A session where the hiring manager asks you all the questions and then you answer them.

Of course there will be some of that, but the interview shouldn’t be all that.

You should ask some questions of your own.

The reason… is to show you’re engaged in the conversation and to find out more about the role and the company.

In the video… Eight Questions To Ask Hiring Managers, I go through the best questions to ask the hiring manager while you’re in the interview.

Those questions will not only give you a great idea of what it’s like to work at the company,

But by asking them you’ll also impress the hiring manager. So go to Connectzapp.com and check it out.

The other reason it’s good to have a two-way conversation is it builds rapport with the hiring manager. In other words, they’ll like you better, which is never a bad thing.
