A Flight Instructor is responsible for training new pilots and increasing the skills of existing pilots, through the use of theoretical (classroom) and practical (flying) lessons.

A flight instructor is required to:

• Develop and follow a training curriculum
• Instruct students during training flights

• Assess student ability and proficiency
• Report on student progress

They train students in:

• Operating procedures
• Aircraft systems
• Navigation and radio operation
• Aerodynamics

To become certified an instructor is required to:

• Already hold a pilot’s license
• Possess a tertiary qualification in training principles and methods of instruction
• Complete a course of training
• Pass an instructor aeronautical knowledge examination
• Pass a flight test
• Meet aeronautical experience requirements

A Flight Instructor Handbook is used for training.

In the USA a Gold Seal Flight Instructor has met the extra requirements under FAA Orders 8700.1. This means they:

• Can teach and evaluate a large number of student pilots
• Maintain a high degree of professionalism and success
• Have a high number of their students succeed in obtaining their license on their first attempt

A commercial pilot’s license is required in addition to the extra training to become an instructor. Typically the time required is between 190 and 250 hours.
